What Equine Liability Insurance Covers?

Horses are large, powerful animals, and even the most well-trained horse can cause a serious accident. If your horse injures someone, damages property, or causes an incident away from your property, you can be held personally and financially responsible.

Equine liability insurance protects horse owners, equine businesses, and organizations from those costs — legal defense, medical bills, and settlement amounts. Coverage is available for individual owners and commercial operations across 45 states.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • In most cases, no. Standard homeowners policies typically exclude livestock liability, have off-premises exclusions, or limit the number of animals covered. Dedicated equine liability insurance is the appropriate coverage for horse owners.

  • Personal horse owner liability covers privately owned horses used for personal recreation. Commercial equine liability covers horses and activities that are part of a business — boarding, training, instruction, breeding, and sales. If you charge for any horse-related service, you need commercial coverage.

  • CCC insurance covers horses that are in your care but that you don't own. If a boarded horse is injured while in your care and the owner holds you responsible, CCC covers that liability. Standard general liability specifically excludes it.
